If you have 20 or more people working for you, you must appoint a Health, Safety and Environment Representative (HSE reps). If you don’t, the Department of labour (DoL) could slap you with a R50 000 fine or 1 year in jail… Or BOTH!
But, unfortunately, it’s not as easy as just picking someone.
In fact, every day I receive tens of questions from bewildered managers trying to figure out how to choose HSE reps, how to train them and what documents they need to keep. Like this question I received from one of my subscribers…
“I need to draw up a policy document for the election of health and safety representatives. Should we agree on criteria, e. g. the period of appointment, the ability to read and write? Should we send the individual for external training?”
